ESSENCE FEATURES MY FIRST RACE IN LAMU, KENYA

Something amazing happened!! I found myself in AFRICA for the very first time and I assembled the first women’s sailing race team Lamu, Kenya has ever seen.

I was beyond honored to be featured on Essence Magazine’s site. Click the link below to read the full story. A big thank you to the ladies who trusted me enough to makeup this team of brave women. None of them knew how to sail and most didn’t know how to swim but they all embraced their adventurous spirits and we made history. Those guys are the real Women Warriors!

HOW I GOT INTO SAILING 4 YEARS AGO

Hello! Since there are so many new followers (WOW – thank you!!) I thought I’d introduce myself and tell my story.

4 years ago a friend invited me to come out and sail and I was hooked. I decided I wanted to learn how to sail so I scrounged up the courage to take an ASA 101 course and now I absolutely love it. Shortly after I took the course a coworker invited me to come out and race with him at his club. I was completely intimidated but he assured me that it would be fine.

He was absolutely right! That night I met the team and I was surprised to see quite a few ladies were on it. They were more then happy to show me the ropes and I’ve been racing with them ever since.

Between May and September I race in New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island with the team. During the other months I travel around the world looking for opportunities to encourage more women to learn the sport.

I want to encourage more people to try to get outdoors, and try new things especially on the water.

Are there times when I’m afraid, Yes! But I push past that because once I accomplish something I realize that I’m stronger than I think. The one thing I took away from this experience is that you can do anything you set your mind to!
